New Delhi/Beijing: China has sharply criticised the United States over its longstanding sanctions and economic blockade against Cuba, saying the measures are causing serious hardship for the Cuban people, according to international media reports.

Speaking at a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian urged Washington to end what he described as its policy of blockade, coercion and pressure against Cuba.

“The United States should immediately cease its blockade, coercion and pressure tactics against Cuba,” Lin Jian said, adding that the sanctions have had a significant humanitarian and economic impact on the Cuban population.

China reiterated its longstanding opposition to unilateral sanctions, maintaining that the US embargo has adversely affected Cuba’s development and the well-being of its citizens. Beijing also called for resolving differences through dialogue and respect for international law rather than through economic pressure.

The remarks come amid continued international debate over the decades-old US embargo on Cuba, which has remained a point of contention in global diplomatic forums.
